Who Can Obtain Ghanaian Citizenship?
Ghanaian citizens are individuals who were born within or outside of the country, where at least one parent is also Ghanaian. Ghanaian citizenship isn’t limited to birth only – one may also acquire citizenship by naturalization if residency conditions are met, by adoption and by registration, upon satisfaction of legal requirements.
Dual Citizenship
Dual Citizenship is allowed in Ghana for non-citizens and Ghanaian citizens who hold other nationalities. The recipient of the second citizenship is required to register the second citizenship in Ghana, and obtain a dual citizenship certificate.
Road to Ghanaian Citizenship
The journey to Ghanaian citizenship all begins with your first visit, and then the decision to make Ghana home. From there, you will obtain either a residence permit or work permit, allowing you a legal stay in the country without any visa extensions needed. Once you’ve been a resident of Ghana for a few years, and have taken up the fundamentals of a local language (or two!) you can now begin to explore the pathway to citizenship. You can expect to wait at least 5 years to begin this process, but there are exceptions made to this waiting period on a case by case basis.
